Advertise a job that demands 365, 24/7 accountability and you might assume few would have any interest in applying. Factor in a minimum of downtime and no overtime pay and it’s reasonable to expect the applicant pool could further drop. Interestingly, interest in the job begins to perk with the mention of intangible moments of love, bonding and sweetly drawn notes and pictures.
If any traditional employer made those kinds of demands with the promise of rewards in the form of a colored pencil drawing or a hug it would be understandable to find most opting out of the opportunity. That is unless the job is one of motherhood, than the dynamic couldn’t be more different. As caregivers of their family, moms are well-known for giving their all and consistently putting the needs of their family in front of their own, sometimes even to the detriment of their own health.
Importance of Self Care
Much like the announcement that happens at the beginning of a plane flight, there is a reason why passengers are asked to put on their own oxygen mask before helping someone else. What may sound like common sense often bears repeating, particularly when you look at it from the perspective of day-to-day life. How many times does mom end up eating the leftovers of her children in lieu of sitting down to enjoy her own meal or maybe starts the day without the benefit of a shower or brushing her teeth because a little voice is calling?
Obviously a case of dirty hair or a missed meal is not going to cause long-term damage but when this selfless behavior turns into missed appointments for an annual physical or putting off a pap smear or breast exam because of the interruption or inconvenience to the family schedule, it’s time to take a page from the airlines. In many homes, mothers keep the children clothed, fed and cared for and often shoulder the majority of the housework. After a while this constant activity has the potential to bring anyone down, even mom.
Make Every Day Mother’s Day
This May, in addition to finding mom the perfect present or making her breakfast in bed, consider if there’s an opportunity to also create more time for mom to take care for herself year-round. This family-wide support for mom can be a great way to lessen any guilt felt as a result of caring for herself. One of the best ways to do this is to encourage mom to set aside time for things that feel good, whether that’s taking a walk, having an hour of the day to herself or being supported by a network of family and friends so she can take part in regular self-care, including annual gynecology appointments, massage, and exercise.
